Mississippi River, dark and murky

As I cross at Memphis Tennessee;

My mind goes trailin' back to where I came from;

And it leaves me wonderin' where I'll be.

The night has fallen, and my eyes are heavy;

I've been sleepin' little if at all;

My thinkin' wanders on to days that might have been,

And to people I should call.

Winding thoughts, my memories go racin' 'round my head,

Take me back to the days I used to know;

Finding thoughts I trace again the paths that I might tread;

On into Texas, past the pines and country farms,

Dallas skyline through the haze;

Comes the dawn, back home visions grip me,

And my mind becomes a maze.

Back to my friends, who stayed behind together

From all the dreams he's ever known.
